Great ideas change the footprint of history.

Romulus and Remus founded Rome. Bill Gates developed Microsoft, and the Constitution of the United States of America changed the world.

So when four of our board members suggested developing a signature fundraising event for the Greater Kansas City Chapter of the American Red Cross, we knew we had to listen.

Since 2005, the Red Ball has been in the mind’s eye of Chapter board members Pasquale Trozzolo, Joe Donnelly, Joyce Hayhow and Willie Lanier, Jr.

The four envisioned a fundraiser that would bring together the entire metro area in support of the Greater Kansas City Chapter of the American Red Cross. The event would enhance the bonds between the organization — which is so important to the strength of our community — and the corporations that are concerned about the city’s vitality.

The Red Cross held its inaugural Red Ball on Feb. 15, 2008. Through the Fabulous Four’s leadership and commitment, the event was a rousing success. They connected the Chapter to the management of the Sprint Center — at that time under construction — and the group was excited to host this premier event.

More than a thousand people flocked to the heart of Kansas City, and the event to support the Red Cross. The Red Ball raised about $370,000 for Chapter programs and services.

In 2009, with the addition of a live auction and the Fund a Family giving opportunity, the Red Cross was successful again.

The Fabulous Four don’t refer to themselves as such, that’s how we see them. They view themselves as Kansas Citians who have a passion for the good work of the American Red Cross and a passion for the city they love. Their passion has shown through in two successful years of the Red Ball and a future for the event that is very bright. In truth, we think that’s pretty fabulous!
